Last  19th of January came into force the European Law 2006/126/CE which obligates to  European residents who live in Spain more than two years to renew their driving licenses according to the Spanish renewal periods, that means that any driving license granted by any other European country should be renewed according to Spanish rules each 10 years or 5 for people older than 65 years.

According to European Law, someone is considered resident if spends more than 185 days a year in the country. So, that means that  non Spanish people who are considered resident in Spain for at least two years, will have the legal obligation to renew their driving licenses according to the Spanish renewal periods of 10 or 5 years even if they got a driving license of their country with not expiration time.

There are around two thousand million of European Resident in Spain who may have driving licenses of their countries without no expiration time such us French or German residents either English  or Norwegian residents whose expiration time is until 70 years old or even 100.

It is relevant to highlight that Spanish Traffic Department (DGT) may fine resident who do not comply with that law.
